What is exit rate?
Exit rate is the share of pageviews on a page that were the last page in the session, regardless of where the session started.
Exit rate vs bounce rate.
Bounce rate is single-page sessions only. Exit rate counts all views and asks how often this page was the end. They answer different questions.
The formula.
Exit rate = exits / pageviews on that page × 100.
A worked example.
300 exits from 1,200 pageviews is 25%.
What to do with it.
Sort pages by exit rate and judge in context. Confirmation pages should exit high. Conversion pages and key funnel steps should not. Where they do, fix the next step.
