What is video completion rate?

Video completion rate, or VCR, is the share of people who started your video and watched it all the way through. It is the clearest signal of whether the content held attention, not just earned a play.

It is most useful as a relative measure. A completion rate only means something next to other videos of similar length and placement, because both shift the number heavily.

The formula.

Video completion rate = (completed views ÷ video starts) × 100. A completed view is one that reached the end.

Many platforms also report quartile completion at 25, 50, and 75%, which shows exactly where viewers drop off. The full-completion rate is the headline; the quartiles are the diagnosis.

A worked example.

A video gets 1,000 starts and 700 viewers watch to the end. Completion rate is 700 ÷ 1,000 × 100, which is 70%.

What is a good video completion rate?

70% and up is strong, 50 to 70% is moderate, and below 50% means most viewers leave before the end. But length dominates everything: a six-second clip completes far higher than a two-minute one, so the only fair comparison is within the same length and placement.

A completion is engagement, but engagement only matters if it leads somewhere. Pairing completion with attention that turns into action connects the watch to the result.

How to improve it.

Hook viewers in the first few seconds, keep the video as short as the message allows, and put the key point early. Most drop-off happens at the start and from sheer length.

The same instinct that holds a viewer to the end holds a reader on a page, which is the craft behind content that holds attention.

FAQ

How do you calculate video completion rate?
Divide completed views by video starts and multiply by 100. 700 completions from 1,000 starts is 70%.
What is a good video completion rate?
70% and up is strong, but it depends heavily on length. Short videos complete far higher than long ones.
What counts as a completed view?

Why is my video completion rate low?
Usually the first few seconds or the overall length. Long videos and weak openings lose viewers fastest.
Is video completion rate the same as VTR?
View-through rate often means completions over impressions. Completion rate here is completions over starts.
